Distinguished and Famous people from Wangaratta
βοΈ William Ah Ket
William Ah Ket was born at Wangaratta in 1876 into a Chinese family involved in tobacco growing and trade. He attended the local high school and studied Chinese at home, becoming proficient in both languages and acting as a court interpreter while still young. Legal study led to a distinguished career at the Victorian Bar, where he challenged discriminatory treatment of Chinese Australians. His father's wish that he use the law in his community's interests gave that career a clear purpose. Wangaratta supplied the family and educational beginnings behind a significant advocate for equal treatment.
π΅ Nick Cave
Nick Cave moved with his family from Warracknabeal to Wangaratta in 1960. At nine he joined Holy Trinity Cathedral's choir, an early musical experience before his later years in rock bands, songwriting and performance. His parents worked in education, and his childhood combined school, reading and the town's river landscape. Those beginnings preceded a career that carried him far from north-eastern Victoria. Wangaratta's association is the childhood home and choir, rather than his birthplace: a useful distinction in the story of a musician whose work repeatedly returned to memory, place and the power of language.
ποΈ Sir John Bowser
John Bowser settled at Wangaratta around 1880 and developed a long career linking newspapers with public life. He became owner of the Wangaratta Chronicle, represented the district in state parliament and served briefly as Victorian premier in 1917β18. Later he was Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. His local work included helping establish Wangaratta's high and technical schools. The newspaper remained a major interest until ill health near the end of his life. A short premiership sits within a much longer record of reporting, representation and educational advocacy rooted in the town.
ποΈ Sir Edward βWearyβ Dunlop
Edward Dunlop was born at Wangaratta in 1907, with his childhood and schooling centred on the Stewarton and Benalla district. Pharmacy studies preceded medicine and surgery, while rugby and boxing showed another side of his abilities. During the Second World War he became a prisoner of war and cared for fellow prisoners under severe conditions. The surgeon's later public work included advocacy for veterans. His Wangaratta connection is his birthplace, distinct from the nearby places where he grew up, giving the town its precise place in the life of a widely respected Australian.
βοΈ Lores Bonney
Wangaratta was the destination of an unusually ambitious dinner journey by aviator Lores Bonney. On Boxing Day 1931 she left Brisbane at 4.30 in the morning and arrived at 7.20 that evening, in time to dine with her father. She later regarded the flight as her greatest achievement, despite much longer journeys around Australia and overseas. Her preparation for those adventures included blind flying, night flying and engine maintenance. The local connection is a specific arrival and family visit, rather than a Wangaratta birthplace or permanent home. Dinner had required rather more planning than a booking and a short drive.
